Welcome to the choose your own adventure experience! 🔮

Here we will guide you along a short interactive adevnture of your own choosing!

To start, you will be prompted for a theme that your adventure will have.

Then, you will be given 3 choices for how to proceed.

This will repeat a few times and eventually your journey will end.

Please enjoy!

You're about to embark on a new adventure, choose a theme for it (be creative): a boy is who can easily pick up others feelings and thoughts but loses his temper is going to a new world

~~~Generating your story~~~
As dusk settled over the small town of Eldridge, a boy named Ethan stood by his bedroom window, staring at the vibrant colors painting the sky. With a gift that was both a blessing and a curse, he could sense the thoughts and emotions of those around him. Most days, he navigated through the swells of happiness, sadness, and anger from his friends and family. But when the emotions became overwhelming, Ethan often lost his temper, unleashing a storm of his own feelings upon the unsuspecting souls nearby.
This evening felt different. A new warmth surged in his chest, beckoning him toward an unseen destination. A brilliant light flickered in the distance, and without a second thought, Ethan leaped out of his window and raced toward it. The air shimmered as he drew nearer, and before he knew it, he was engulfed in light, his senses spinning in a whirlpool of emotions.
When he emerged, Ethan found himself on the shores of an otherworldly beach, surrounded by strange creatures and enigmatic landscapes. The air throbbed with feelings unlike any he had encountered before, a cacophony of joy, sorrow, hope, and fear.
Before Ethan could gather his thoughts, three creatures approached him, each radiating a unique emotional aura. One, a shimmering figure of light, exuded pure joy. The second, a shadowy, serpentine being, seemed steeped in melancholy. The last, a vibrant, flickering flame, flickered with raw anger.
Feeling overwhelmed yet intrigued, Ethan faced a choice.
1. Approach the shimmering figure of light to learn about the joy of this new world.
2. Seek out the shadowy being to understand the depths of their sorrow.
3. Confront the fiery creature and try to quell the anger radiating from it.
Enter your choice: 1
Ethan cautiously stepped toward the shimmering figure of light, its radiance wrapping around him like a warm embrace. As he drew closer, he could feel an effervescent laughter bubbling from the being. “Welcome, traveler!” the figure chimed, its voice melodious and inviting. “I am Lirael, the Spirit of Joy. In our world, emotions dance freely, and I can show you how to embrace that joy!”
Ethan felt the weight of his own frustrations begin to lighten, but deep down, he knew that joy alone wouldn’t suffice. Lirael gestured towards a distant hill, where children of various shapes played games filled with laughter. “Join them! Experience joy unfiltered! It will teach you to control the chaos of emotions!”
Just as he considered this, a pulse of despair rippled through the air, distracting him. He felt the serpent-like shadow take a step closer, its presence heavy with sorrow. Ethan was torn; his heart leaned toward Lirael's joyful call but was tethered to the looming figure of sadness.
Ethan had a choice to make.
1. Join Lirael and the children on the hill to fully experience joy.
2. Greet the shadowy being to learn more about its sorrow.
3. Attempt to merge the joy of Lirael with the sorrow of the shadow being, seeking balance.
Enter your choice: 3
~~~Generating your story~~~

Ethan took a deep breath, summoning his courage as he approached Lirael and the shadowy being. “What if I could take your joy and your sorrow and find some kind of balance?” he proposed, his voice steady with resolve.

Lirael's bright form flickered with curiosity. “Emotions are powerful, young one. They should flow as they will, but mingling them can create harmony—or chaos.”

The shadowy figure, whose name he felt in the air was Nyx, inclined toward him. “You wish to understand my sorrow? It is heavy; it could drown you.”

“I’m willing to try,” Ethan replied, straining against the weight of Nyx’s emotions. As he reached out, he felt a gentle tug, the sorrow embracing him like a thick fog. Yet, beneath it, he could sense the glimmers of latent hopes struggling to emerge.

Ethan closed his eyes. He envisioned joy streaming from Lirael swirling with Nyx's shadows, creating warmth that transformed despair into understanding. With this mental picture, he spoke softly, “Let them dance together.”

A wave of light and darkness enveloped him, and just before he felt himself overwhelmed, he opened his eyes to see the colors of both emotions intermingling beautifully.

Encouraged, Ethan considered his next move.

1. Invite Lirael and Nyx to share their emotions with him completely, hoping for deeper understanding.

2. Seek out a way to amplify this merging effect, hoping to create an even greater harmony.

3. Call upon other creatures in the area to join them, creating a larger emotional dance that includes a variety of feelings.

Enter your choice: 3

~~~Generating your story~~~
With a newfound sense of purpose, Ethan turned to the vibrant landscape around him. “Let’s invite them all!” he exclaimed, his voice ringing with enthusiasm. Lirael and Nyx exchanged glances of uncertainty but soon nodded in agreement.
Ethan began to walk along the shoreline, calling out to the colorful beings dancing through the waves of emotion. One by one, curious creatures approached him—a gentle luminescent whale, radiating compassion; a mischievous breeze sprite, filled with playful mischief; and a sturdy, wise tree spirit that felt ancient yet timeless.
As they gathered, Ethan explained his vision of a grand emotional dance, blending joy, sorrow, compassion, mischief, and wisdom. A ripple of excitement coursed through their collective energy, and together, they formed a circle on the shore, creating a radiant tapestry of intertwining feelings.
As they joined hands, emotions swelled and mixed, spiraling upward in a breathtaking display. Ethan could feel their collective strength paint the air with whirls of vibrant colors. In that moment, he understood that every emotional thread mattered, creating a symphony where chaos turned into harmony.
Just as the dance reached its zenith, Ethan sensed the shimmering portal back to his world opening. A bittersweet feeling washed over him—a longing to stay but an understanding of the purpose he had found.
1. Step through the portal to return home with the wisdom of emotions, ready to embrace his journey ahead.
2. Stay in this enchanting world to explore further and learn from the creatures of feelings.
3. Use his newfound understanding to bridge both worlds, becoming a guardian of emotions between realms.
Enter your choice: 3
~~~Generating your story~~~

With a determined heart, Ethan chose to bridge both worlds, knowing that the gift of understanding emotions could create a deeper connection between realms. As he stood before the shimmering portal, he turned to Lirael, Nyx, and the other beings who had danced beside him. “Together, we can help others understand their feelings, no matter where they are,” he said, his voice ringing with conviction.

The creatures nodded, their features illuminated with encouragement. Lirael’s joy burst forth, a radiant beam lighting the path ahead, while Nyx’s sorrow became a gentle guide, reminding them of the importance of empathy and compassion. The luminescent whale, breeze sprite, and tree spirit joined hands, forming a circle of support around Ethan.

In an instant, the landscape shimmered, and Ethan could feel the tether between worlds strengthening. He visualized every feeling as a thread, weaving connections that reached across the divide. The vibrant energies of joy, sorrow, compassion, mischief, and wisdom filled the air as he opened himself to the task ahead.

As he stepped through the portal, the familiar sights of Eldridge welcomed him back. The colors were brighter, the emotions of those around him richer. Ethan felt empowered, ready to share his knowledge and help others embrace the myriad of feelings that make life beautiful.

With each encounter, he became a beacon of understanding, guiding his friends and family through the labyrinth of their own emotions. The worlds were now intertwined, and Ethan, the guardian of emotions, had found his true purpose: to inspire harmony and compassion, enriching both realms with the power of understanding.

git new branch and push from command line

Go to (cd) to git repo.
1. Make a new branch :
git checkout -b newBranchName

git checkout -b a10

2. Make changes are add all edited files to that branch in current and sub folders:

  git add .

3. Commit to local branch, example:

git commit -m "changes for release a10 issue 3291 user addresses"

4. Till now everything is on local, to push generally will do:

git push

5. But since this is a new local branch need to tell git which remote branch it should point to, it does not assume it will have the same remote name, helps us by giving error message:
fatal: The current branch test has no upstream branch.
To push the current branch and set the remote as upstream, use

    git push --set-upstream origin test

So now give command:

    git push --set-upstream origin test

if your remote auth is set up should push the changes. If branch is there on remote, made by someone else will get errors.

Generally need to do steps 2,3 and 4. Or can use your IDE to do the same.

A good stand alone UI is https://www.gitkraken.com/features need this for multiple branches for simple one branch work IDE with git plugin is enough or the command line.

Let us add keywords to our online job posting skills. Not the same generic ones

To freelancer and other sites that help you find coders and part time workers online:
New feature suggestion
Pity we cant add skills in project keywords. we need to add some general skill where there are 50,000 freelancers but few in what we want.

Why cant you add a feature like http://stackoverflow.com/ where people with experience like 4-5 projects and having a separate attribute "can-add-skills" can add new ones. they don thave to be live immediately but can be reviewed by someone and added in 1-2 weeks. even if wont help immediately will help after a month or two.

Example "libGdx" is a framework that makes mobile games, but even if u know android most wont know this. but then you add android in your project then they act like they do as it comes in their feed. better would be if i could just put libGdx. This is a special skill. Not to be mixed with the main stream of android developers..

To be clear. Like we can choose android or java as a skill now, we should be able to add a skill like libGdx and after a 1-2 day review by peers it should be allowed. so when posting a project a new key word might be available but i can ask for it and then can edit my project keywords later or at least add it in a future project. similarly in some place i should be to suggest new keywords without having to post a project. can keep this open for few buyers only, who know what they are doing and have experience using the site

Truthy values : Java parsing string to boolean

When i worked for a product company for 3 years, there was a lot of custom code made by many developers. And since we had over 20 customers there were a lot of settings and flag driven features.

Some developer would use 'yes' to denote something was true or enabled. Others would use 'Y' others would use 'true' and a few would be case in sensitive. For a few '1' was okay to denoate true.

Similarly false could be 'f', 'FALSE', 0, 'no' in strict case or case insensitive.

Made a small function to denote truthy  value parsing, along with a default (if null or that row missing from the RDBMS table).

boolean isTruthy(String value, boolean default){
 if(value == null || value.length()){
 char c = Character.toLowerCase(value.charAt(0));
 return c == 'y' || c == 't' || c=='1';
 }

lock and swich off screen on linux, ununtu, centos

Method one:
Make a text file and call it 'switchOffScreen.sh' save it in home directory or other dir (folder).

Contents of file:

#!/bin/bash
gnome-screensaver-command -l
sleep 2
xset dpms force off

Give it execute permissions by command:

chmod +x ~/switchOffScreen.sh

Now make a short cut in keyboard to this script, call it when required.

Method two :
Tested on ubuntu :
open keyboard short cuts, make a new shortcut with command :

 gnome-screensaver-command -l | sleep 2 |  xset dpms force off

Add a shortcut, I overwrote Ctrl-Alt-L confirmed I want to over ride the default and now my screen goes off after I lock. Less power used.

Google Youtube suggestions for player - settings for quality and annotations in profile

To google support
1. in full screen goes to HD even if i made it go to 480 or 360p in earlier videos. can you add a setting in profile for your player not to do this? Why? Live in India, pay INR 1300/- per month to a "fibre" optic broad band provider (ACT) but still get slow connections, except for their sponsored speedtest site! duh. If your player does not go to HD i can watch without pauces and bad breaks.

2. similarly with annotations - a setting in profile to turn off by default

Note this was shared via the feedback tab too but re sharing so others who agree can send to them as well

Java: rename file : file_0001.dat, file_0002 to file_0004, file_0008.dat

Issue: bunch of files name file_0001.dat, file_0002.dat......file_1000.dat.
 I want to change the file names such as the number after file_ will be a
 multiple of 4 in comparison to previous file name. So i want to change

file_0001.dat to file_0004.dat
file_0002.dat to file_0008.dat

Start from the highest and go to lowest. As
if u go from lowest - there will be conflicts. example u cant rename 001
 to 004 if there is a 004 from before ...what if it at first you have
file_0001.dat, file_0001.dat, ... file_0004.dat.

SSL, Bank domains, heart beat

To Times of India Editor:
Saw an article in the technology section of the TOI physical news paper on 17th April, 2014 about HeartBeat and SSL, it has lists of banks and other websites and the results from some tool.

Would be  good if they update the website with note on banks, instead of just pulling the article.
The main domain of the banks like hdfcbank.com or icicibank.com when anyone who has used netbanking and looked a the address bar should know that the domain changes. and with that the certificate so for example icici is https://infinity.icicibank.co.in and HDFC is https://netbanking.hdfcbank.com/ why the difference - i dont know just the way it was implemented - maybe can change the link without affecting the main site. someone did it years back and just continued. with a sub domain can even have a different IP/ web server, more clustering options. And a sub domain needs a different certificate;  so they put the grand security on this and the main site that is just links, marketing & help content.

  Is incorrect to say icici has no ssl, please add this note that the sub domains where net banking happens does have (after testing it). I don't work for a bank nor a share holder but know something about server tech.

Really makes you think how much of what you report is true and how much is just ignorant, under researched or a way of getting back to people who are not advertising enough?
Maybe vet these articles by paying tech savvy people to proof read first?

Java pre compiler ... well nearly

Ant
For simple needs, Ant can be used to do substitution in your sources.

We insert into the code a special tag to delimit code that need to be stripped by the Ant script. Let's say we use //@STARTDEBUG@// and //@ENDDEBUG@//.

package academic.howto;

import javax.swing.JFrame;

public class Example {

public static void main(String args[]){
JFrame f = new JFrame();
f.setSize(300,200);
f.setVisible(true);
f.setTitle("HowTo");
//@STARTDEBUG@//
f.setTitle(f.getTitle() + " DEBUG version");
//@ENDDEBUG@//
f.setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE);
}
}

If you execute this code, the JFrame title will have the word "DEBUG" appended to it.

The Ant script to remove the debugging code is :
<project default="buildme">

   <target name="compileprod">
    <copy todir="../out" includeEmptyDirs="false">
    <filterchain>
            <tokenfilter>
            <replacestring from="//@STARTDEBUG@//" to="/*" />
            <replacestring from="//@ENDDEBUG@//" to="*/" />
            </tokenfilter>
    </filterchain>
        <fileset dir=".">
          <include name="**/*.java" />
       </fileset>
    </copy>

    <javac srcdir="../out" />
   </target>

   <target name="compiledebug">
     <javac srcdir="." />
   </target>

   <target name="buildme" depends="compileprod" />
</project>

After running this script, the source (in the ..\out directory)

package academic.howto;

import javax.swing.JFrame;

public class Example {

  public static void main(String args[]){
    JFrame f = new JFrame();
    f.setSize(300,200);
    f.setVisible(true);
    f.setTitle("HowTo");
    /*
    f.setTitle(f.getTitle() + " DEBUG version");
    */
    f.setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE);
  }
}

Only disadvantage is a few more minutes to compile but that is small trade off for a better runtime code - with less logging etc

http://www.rgagnon.com/javadetails/java-0130.html

this is another method ...have a class with a single static final bool and use if statements ... compiler automatically optimizes. CAUTION:this will work for a single project/ jar. if the variable ( public static final boolean RELEASE = true; ) is in another jar then javac will not optimize as you can replace the jars with the var set to false... for big applications might work if each package has the debug class and care is taken to reference only that.

CODE:

public class Debug {
  public static final boolean RELEASE = true;
  }
In your source, when you need some debugging codes, you included them in
 a if statement like
if (Debug.RELEASE) {
   System.out.println("The value of i is " + i);
}
During compilation, since Debug.RELEASE is always true, the code will be present. In the production environment, the Debug class looks like this:
public class Debug {
  public static final boolean RELEASE = false;
  }
When compiling in that environment, the debugging code will be absent from the class file since Debug.release is always false.

java setting multiple system properties via command line options

if you want to set system properties when you invoke java (vs setting them in the system before you start java/ command prompt) can do so with the -D option to java.exe or javaw.exe

You do this for each property.

Lets assume your command line to start jva initially looks like:
java org.mypack.Main

 So if you need to set to properties
usePort=2322
factoryClass=org.mypack.net.Factory1

Then the new command line will be:

java -DusePort=2322 -DfactoryClass=org.mypack.net.Factory1 org.mypack.Main

Pretty obvious except I was not sure if I need to put a ; between properties or have multiple -D

For those using an IDE:
See image - remember these are VM options (VM arguments) and not program arguments

Testing Web Applications With a Real URL on local system on Windows

Testing web applications with a real URL on local on windows. Sometimes web apps need to parse the URL and since all real URLS have at least one '.' localhost might not be suitable for testing.

To get around this :

Open the file called hosts its default location is c:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts or more accurately

%windir%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

{To get the full path on your system you could type

echo %windir%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

on a command prompt}

Open it in notepad and add the line at end

127.0.0.1 www.a.com

This is how my file looks

---- start hosts ----

Now in any browser goto http://a.com/ use this with my XAMPP-PHP-MYSQL set up on local

It maps to local host. Use it as you would use localhost. If your web server is running on a different IP then you can specify that as in

a list of selected files

This was useful years ago when windows did not have this. Nowa days can shift-right click and choose to copy as path. Though to get paths to a bunch of files not sure. But since code.google shutdown, and i did not copy this to github, not sure where this code is, also vb6 was discountinued, need to rewrite it in Go, powershell or python. VB dotnet C# dotnet is too slow but are other choices.

You have a few files selected in Windows explorer and now you want the names or paths in a file or in your clipboard.

This utility does that in a jiffy.

Select files, right click and choose to send to this App : CmdLineToDirTxt.exe

It can either save the file names to a file or copy to the clibboard. Either way it looks like this:

just copy it to your send to folder (or open it and make it copy it self)

Download it here: http://code.google.com/p/win-utils/ it is freeware, open source (code is available) Its just an exe but it depends on the Microsoft VB 6 Runtime http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=bf9a24f9-b5c5-48f4-8edd-cdf2d29a79d5&displaylang=en

i love Java. Solve near every problem. Even UI with applets, J2ME and swing.

Java , J2ME mysql, apache web server - with them can solve most business problemns.

VBA - great tool - have delivered more than 10 projects using this language and it has helped with data and analysis with nearly all my other projects (in conjunction with Excel and Word).

VB6 - the full programming part of VBA

Windows 2000 was when windows OS got on par with unix and beat it in usability.

Oracle for showing all that a database can be.
MySql for being free and now powerful too.

J2ME for being easy to put apps on mobile devices

Linux for great performance ++ and all free. I use Ubuntu, burnt it on a CD from windows and made my system dual boot. instructions search

thank you all the folks behind these technologies!
